Beyond The Classroom
College and Career Planning
College and Career Planning
Beyond the Classroom partners with schools and community organizations to expand access to meaningful career exploration and career readiness support for high school students.
Through workshops, small-group programming, individualized advising, and family engagement, students have the opportunity to better understand their strengths, explore career and education pathways, and build the skills and confidence they need for life after graduation.
Helping students develop the confidence, self-awareness, and decision-making skills they'll use for a lifetime.
Choosing a college, major, or career is just one decision. My goal is to help students develop the skills and confidence to make thoughtful decisions throughout their lives.
Students begin by learning more about themselves.
• Strengths
• Interests
• Skills
• Values
• Work and learning preferences
The goal isn't to tell students what they should become.
It's to give them language and insight they can use to start exploring possibilities.
Students connect what they're learning about themselves to real opportunities.
Depending on the student or program, exploration may include:
• Careers and industries
• College majors and programs
• Skilled trades
• Apprenticeships
• Certifications
• Entrepreneurship
• Emerging career pathways
• Internships and summer experiences
Students learn how to research opportunities, ask better questions, and compare different paths.
Career exploration becomes much more meaningful when students know what to do with what they've learned.
Programming can include:
• Resume development
• Interview preparation
• Networking and informational interviewing
• Professional communication
• Internship and job-search skills
• Employer engagement
• Goal setting and action planning
Students leave with practical next steps they can continue building on.
Beyond the Classroom can be delivered through:
• Individual school partnerships
• District-wide programming
• Pilot programs
• Contracted student advising
• Workshop series
• After-school programming
• Summer programming
• Nonprofit partnerships
• Sponsored student programming
• Community partnerships
Programs can range from a single workshop to a more comprehensive career-navigation initiative.
[DISCUSS A PARTNERSHIP]
Beyond the Classroom is intentionally flexible because every school and student population is different.
Programming can be designed around your existing priorities, student needs, schedule, and available resources.
Individual Career Navigation
Some students benefit from more individualized support than a classroom setting can provide.
Beyond the Classroom can supplement existing school services with one-on-one career navigation focused on:
• Strengths and interests
• Career and pathway exploration
• Decision-making
• Postsecondary options
• Internship and summer planning
• Professional skill development
• Personalized next steps
This can be particularly helpful for students who are unsure of their direction, aren't following a traditional college pathway, or would benefit from additional adult guidance.
Small Group Career Exploration
Small groups allow students to learn from one another while still receiving individualized attention.
Groups can be organized around:
• Career exploration
• Internship preparation
• Senior transition planning
• Industry interests
• Students who are undecided about what's next
• Students exploring alternatives to a traditional four-year college path
Career Readiness Workshops
Interactive workshops can be delivered during the school day, advisory periods, career events, after-school programming, or special initiatives.
Possible topics include:
• Discovering your strengths, skills, interests, and values
• Career exploration and pathways
• How to research careers and industries
• Building your first professional resume
• Networking when you don't have a network
• Preparing for internships and first jobs
• Interviewing and professional communication
• Using LinkedIn and building a professional presence
• Preparing for the transition from high school to what comes next
Workshops can be offered individually or as a series.
Every school and community is different.
I’d love to learn more about your students, the career-readiness work already happening in your organization, and where you see opportunities to provide additional support.
From there, we can explore whether a workshop, pilot program, individualized advising model, or broader partnership makes sense.
